Paper aeroplanes on the upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

Five paper aeroplanes are arranged in a loose, scattered cluster on the skin, each drawn with a pale fill and thin grey-blue outlines and folds. The linework is light and fine, with the shading kept minimal so the shapes read as flat folded paper. The palette is limited to whites, pale greys and soft blue-grey, set against a plain dark teal background.

The first one went out of the bedroom window before Dad had finished his tea, and it nosedived into the Hendersons' privet, so I had to climb the wall to get it back. It was the good paper, the cream stuff from the stationer's on Briggate, and I had folded it on the kitchen table with the wireless going, creasing each fold with my thumbnail the way Dad had shown me.

There were five of us by the time the buses started. Dad had made the first four that morning, one for each of the men on his shift, because he said a plane was only a promise until someone threw it. He wrote a name on the underside of each wing in pencil. Mine was the one that went furthest, past the gasworks and over the canal towpath, and I never told him I had watched it all the way down.

The fifth he kept in his coat pocket. He did not throw it. On the platform at Leeds he held it out to me, flat on his palm, and said the wind was wrong for it today.

I still have it, folded inside the tin where the stamps live. The pencil has gone soft and grey, but when I hold it up to the kitchen window the light comes through the creases, and I can see exactly where his thumb pressed hardest.
