Inverted triangle with dotwork shading on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outlined inverted triangle sits on the forearm, with its upper interior filled by stippled dotwork that fades toward the point. Single dots run in a vertical line above and below the triangle. The work is black ink only, shown on pale skin against a plain grey background with the wearer's dark top and jeans visible at the left edge.

Dear Brother Osric,

You will forgive the blots. The cold has got into the ink again and I write with my breath fogging the page. Brother Walter and I finished marking the cistern house this morning, the work you asked for before the frosts. We set the inverted triangle into the lintel stone as you drew it, point down, toward the floor where the spring comes up. Walter cut the outline with a fine chisel while I held the lamp, and he would not let me touch the dots. He says each one must be struck by the man who measured the water, so I was made to stand on the step and mark the plumb line above and below with a nail, one tap at a time, until my wrist ached.

The shading was the difficult part. Walter wanted the upper half filled solid, to show the full cistern in summer, but the abbot asked that it fade as the triangle narrows, so the point shows only what the spring gives us in the dry months. We pecked the stone in fine speckles and they thin out like frost on a windowpane. I thought it looked like nothing at all until the lamp moved, and then it looked like a tide going out.

I will tell you the strange thing, since you are the only one who will not laugh. This morning the water in the trough stood exactly on the point of the triangle. Walter checked it twice with the rule and said nothing, which for Walter is a sermon. Whatever the stone was meant to hold, it held that.

Yours in the Lord, Brother Anselm
