Geometric shape and bands on a forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black geometric shape, a pentagon-like form with a pointed lower edge, sits on the forearm above two parallel solid black bands that wrap around the arm. The large shape is shaded with fine dotwork stippling that fades slightly toward its edges, while the bands are fully saturated. The image is black and grey, with the arm shown against a plain black background and a white garment at the left edge.

Dear Tom, the Bramleys came down in the wind on Tuesday and I've spent three days picking them out of the wet grass before the wasps find them. Dad's spade is still leaning where you left it against the fruit store wall, and I haven't had the heart to move it. The blade has worn to a point at the bottom, like the shape Mum used to cut from old oilcloth for the pie tins, and the two iron hoops near the grip are still tight, though I keep meaning to see to the rust.

Mr Ashdown from the next holding came over with his cart on Thursday and asked whether we'd sell the lower field. I told him the trees weren't ours to sell, only to look after, and he laughed the way he does when he thinks I'm being a child about it. He left a jar of his honey on the step anyway. I've put it beside the spade, which is a daft place for honey, but it makes me smile to see them together.
The real trouble is the wall at the end of the lower rows. Half of it fell in the storm, and under the rubble I found the old boundary stone Dad always swore was there, flat and grey with a shape cut into its face, the same point at the bottom. I spent an hour trying to lift it on my own before I gave up and scraped the moss off instead.
I dug the spade in at the corner this morning, where Dad said the old boundary ran, and the blade went down clean past the second hoop. Nothing but dark earth and a bit of broken root. I've left the stone where it lies. Come home before the frost takes the last of the plums. Your sister, Ruth.
