Small chevron marks on both hands

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are raised against a plain black background, with the palms angled toward each other. Each hand has a small vertical row of stacked chevron or leaf-like marks in dark blue-black ink, drawn with thin, even lines. The ink is crisp and the marks are placed near the edge of the hand, with the rest of the skin left clear.

Mr Okafor's cuttings had been wrapped in damp newspaper for three days by the time Ruth reached the allotment gate, and she was still holding the bundle when the rain started. The shed door stuck, as it always did, and she put her shoulder to it the way her father had shown her, the one lesson of his she had kept.

Inside, the seed tins sat in a row on the bench with their labels faded to pale ghosts. Someone had written on each in pencil: runner, borlotti, Crimson Glow. She found the small pots under the sink. Mr Okafor had left a note tucked inside the lid of the biggest tin: Water the rhubarb when you water the rest. The rhubarb had been dead since March. She knew that, and he must have known it too.

She sat on the upturned crate and turned a cutting over in her fingers, studying the thin stem and the serrated leaves stacked one above another like folded pennants. She thought of him counting them aloud as he pinched them off, one, two, three, as if the number mattered more than the plant, and she found she was counting too.

The rain stopped as suddenly as it had begun. She pressed the cuttings into the wet soil at the edge of the rhubarb bed, where the old crown still showed pale and stubborn, and watered them with the tin can until the water ran clear. Then she folded the note into her pocket, and walked home with dirt under her nails, already planning which row she would tend on Tuesday.
