Partial arm tattoos beside a girl power t-shirt
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person in a white t-shirt with hand-drawn black line portraits and the words GIRL POWER across the chest, with orange trousers and a dark belt below. Dark tattoos are visible on the forearm at the left edge and the upper arm at the right, though the designs are cut off by the frame and only partly readable. The image is in full colour, with the black ink of the tattoos and shirt drawings set against the white shirt and pale background.

Dear Marguerite, you will laugh, but I have spent three evenings this week drawing the pickers' faces onto a T-shirt with a biro, because Mrs Okafor said the Saturday march needed something to wear that was not a placard. The shirt is Ruth's old one, washed so many times it has gone the colour of milk. I started with Ruth herself, then Pat with her spectacles pushed up into her hair, then the two Dolan girls who never stop talking. Half the faces I have got wrong. The Dolans look like their own grandmother now.

The words are the hard part. I wanted GIRL POWER in capitals across the middle, but my hand wobbles on the W, so I stitched the letters in black thread instead, one at a time, sitting on the back step while the light went out of the orchard. Ruth says the stitches look like ants walking home. I told her that was the idea.
The speech bubbles were Ruth's notion. Each one carries a line one of the women said in the sorting shed last August, when the foreman told them the ladder work was for lads and the sums on the crates were too hard for them. Nobody has written down the reply yet. Ruth says that is for the march, and that we will all shout it together from the gate.
I will bring the shirt on Thursday, when the last of the Bramleys are in. You can add a face of your own to the corner, the one with the bad temper. You know the one I mean. Love, Hannah
