Pastel pony, cupcakes and balloons on the ribs
Neo-trad · Ribs · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the side of the torso and shows a pastel teal pony with a pink mane sitting in a pink dessert bowl with cherries and cupcakes. Around it float a cupcake with sprinkles, red and clear balloons, a smiling yellow star, bubbles, small hearts, music notes and an open book with a jewelled star charm. The bold outlines, soft shading and pink swirling background give it a bright, cartoonish finish.

Mrs Pilling had run the tea rooms on Brightwell Pier for thirty-one years, and in all that time nothing had been stolen from the back kitchen except a shortbread finger and, once, a teaspoon. So when the copper bowl went missing on the Tuesday, she did not panic. She went straight to the top shelf, where the little teal pony usually sat between the sponge stand and the jar of sugar violets, and found it empty too.

Her grandson Dev found the trail before the breakfast rush was over. Sprinkles led out of the back door and along the planks, a silver balloon string had snagged on the gull netting, and a single cherry stalk lay on the railings like a dropped pin. They followed it to the end of the pier, where the lighthouse steps climbed up into the wind, and there was the pony, sitting in the pink bowl as if it were a boat, a cupcake balanced on her knee, a yellow star hovering above her head like a lamp that had lost its shade.
Mrs Pilling did not scold. She climbed the steps slowly, sat down beside the bowl and asked what it was like up there. The pony did not answer, but she tipped her head towards an open book weighted down with a star-shaped brooch, its pages fluttering as if somebody were humming the tune printed on them. Dev said afterwards that the brooch had glittered the whole way up, as though it were pointing.
They ate the last cupcakes on the steps, the three of them and the star, and watched the gulls wheel above the harbour. By closing time the bowl was back on the top shelf with one cherry missing and a neat little music note iced onto the glaze. Mrs Pilling never found out who had drawn it, though she suspected the pony, and she never once asked the star to come down.
