Paw print tattoo on the back of the neck

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small paw print tattoo sits on the back of the neck, just below the hairline. The print is made of a central pad and four toe pads in solid grey-blue ink with soft edges. The background is out of focus, with a grey top along the bottom edge of the frame.

Sit nearer, the lot of you, the fire won't reach the back benches and I'm not raising my voice for the Carter boys again. Now you've all walked past the well at the top of Cutter's Lane and seen the mud there, the round pads and the four little toes, pressed fresh every evening since the thaw. Nobody in Hollin End owns a dog that big, so it must be a wild one, or a ghost, or the miller's Tam pretending again.

It started the spring the mill burned. A grey bitch came out of the wood at dusk, thin as a rake, and walked the same track to the well and back, never once drinking. Old Sarah Penny set out a bowl of scraps and it didn't touch them. She said it was looking for something, and whatever it was looking for was not in any of our kitchens.

Then the Harrow girl went missing in the wood, the one with the red ribbon, and the men went out with lanterns and came back at midnight with nothing but their boots full of bog. Nobody thought to follow the grey dog. I did. I was too stubborn to sleep. It led me through the holly, round the fallen oak, and stopped at a hollow where a child's shoe lay in the moss, and the prints went on past it, deeper, towards the sound of a stream.

Now, what do you think she found, the dog or the girl? Ah, you'll have to wait. Pass me that cup. The prints still come every evening, and if you look closely by the well, you'll see they always turn back toward the trees, as if something is still being brought home.
