The water tanker had started pulling left somewhere after the last bore, and by the time the road bent round the red ridge I had stopped blaming the wind. I was nursing it along the gravel at forty when I saw the elephants. They were not so much on the road as crossing it, a grey shape walking slow and certain, and behind her a smaller one with its trunk curled against the back of her leg, as if holding a rope nobody else could see.

I stopped the rig and let the engine tick. My father used to say elephants remember every track they have ever walked, and that a herd will keep to the same line for a hundred years until someone runs a fence across it. There was no fence here, only wire-grass and the white glare of the pan beyond. The larger one lifted her head and looked at the tanker with one eye, unimpressed, then kept on. The calf never looked at me at all. It simply held on to her, the way you hold a sleeve in a crowd.

When they reached the far verge the dust hung in the low light for a long time after they had gone. I sat with my hands on the wheel and thought about the water sloshing behind me, bound for a depot where nobody would ask where it had come from or how far it had travelled. Then I put the rig back in gear and drove on.

At the depot gate the man with the clipboard asked if I'd had any trouble on the road. I said no. In the verge behind me, two lines of prints ran off together into the scrub, and I did not look back to check whether they had stopped.
