Black and grey paw print on upper back

Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A paw print tattoo shows four toe pads and a larger central pad, with the fur on the main pad rendered in fine, layered strokes. The toe pads use stippled dots and soft grey shading to suggest texture and depth. The tattoo is in black and grey on smooth skin, with a dark curtain visible in the background at the top of the frame.

The dog was already on the gallery steps when you reached the top of the iron stair, her coat dark with rain and steaming where the lamp's sweep caught her. Her ears were flat. She did not bark. She simply turned and looked at the sea, then at you, then at the sea again, until you understood that you were being told something and were slow to hear it.

The lamp had stuttered at half past nine. The clockwork that turned the lens had seized on its weights, and Harrow Skerry lay dark in the middle of a crossing the Penhallow ferry had made every Thursday for forty years. You went down for the crank handle and came back up with cold hands and a bad temper. Bess walked the brass rail ahead of you, pressing prints into the salt that had dried on it, four toes and a broad soft heel, and she did not stop until you had wound the weights by hand and the great glass began, slowly, to turn.

It was past midnight when she went to the north side and stood with her forelegs braced on the railing. A boat lantern was bobbing in the race below, no more than a spark, and beneath it a boy clung to a kelp-hung buoy with one arm and shouted in a voice the wind kept snatching. You had the coil of line in your hands before you knew you had moved. Bess went down the rock path ahead of you, sure-footed, marking each step in the wet with the same four toes and heel, so that when you climbed back up with the boy wrapped in your oilskin, the path was there to follow.

At first light the glass was still turning. You found her asleep by the stove with her chin on the boy's abandoned boot, and on the lantern-room window, where the salt had dried in pale streaks, a single print the size of your palm, pressed there from the outside by something that had stood on the gallery in the dark and watched the sea.
