Watercolour paw prints on a lower leg
Calf · Colour · Photo
A leg is shown with several paw prints in purple, blue and pink, trailing diagonally down the skin. Soft, blended colour fills the prints and loose splatters of ink spray outwards around them, with no hard black outlines. The tattoo fills the frame against a pale, plain background.

The first print landed on the sea-blue wash before Ruth could lift her brush. He shook himself at the easel and a spray of colour flew across three days of work.

She tried to lift the marks with a damp rag, which only spread them thinner and more hopeful. Pilot sat by the table, tail sweeping the floor, pleased with the mess he had made. On the table lay a letter from her brother in Penzance, still unopened, its postmark smudged by a pawprint of pale pink.
By noon she had given up on rescuing the old sheet. She pinned a fresh one to the board and let the dog walk it on purpose, guiding him with a biscuit from one corner to the other. Each print came down pink, then blue, then deep violet, and when he bolted she flicked the brush so the splatter fanned outward like spray off a bow.
When the paper dried, the trail ran diagonally off the edge and out of the frame. Ruth signed it in the bottom corner, then added a small line beneath her name: with assistance from Pilot. She opened her brother's letter at last, and found he had written only to say he was coming to see the pictures.
