Three cats in a heart on an ankle

Ankle · Colour · Photo

Three cat heads are arranged in a cluster, with a calico at the top left, a grey tabby at the top right and a ginger tabby at the bottom centre. A thin purple outline curves behind them like a heart, and the fur is shaded with soft, painterly blends. The tattoo is shown in colour on pale skin against a dark background, with a black strap visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Snow had sealed the pass for nine days when the innkeeper's widow, Maud Harrow, found the three cats asleep in the flour bin. The calico was the eldest and had opinions. The grey tabby was thin and wary and would not come near the fire. The ginger was the youngest, round as a loaf, and had no sense at all.

They had come up the valley road in October, following a carter who fed them and then never returned. Maud took them in because the mice were already at the sacks. She named them for the bakery: Crust, Tin and Dough. Nobody in the village remembered who had chosen the names first.

Halfway through the second week the stores ran low. Maud had two loaves, a jar of dripping and a sack of oats with weevils in it. No travellers came up the road. The cats did not seem hungry. Each night they curled together on the settle in a tight knot, faces touching, as if they were keeping a secret from the wind.

On the ninth night a knock came at the door. Maud opened it to find a child standing in the drift with a lantern, a grey cloak and frost in her eyebrows. Behind her the snow stood taller than a man. "The cats said the light was on," the child said. Maud looked down. Crust, Tin and Dough sat on the step in a row, tails wrapped neatly round their feet, waiting to be let in. She had not heard them go out.

Maud gave the child the last loaf and set her by the fire. The three cats climbed onto her lap and slept there until dawn. When the thaw came the road was open, and the child was gone, though a fresh loaf stood on the sill every morning after that, still warm.
