Owl and paw print tattoos on ankles
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A back view of two legs in white canvas trainers. A larger black line drawing of a cartoon owl perched on a branch sits on the lower calf, with loose, sketchy linework and little shading. A small paw print in blue-grey with black pads sits on the ankle of the other leg, against a orange wall and grey paving.

Dear Tom,

The owl is back on the oak behind the stile, the one with the split trunk like an open mouth. Mr Oddie says it's the same bird that nested in the chapel roof before they boarded it up, but he says that about everything with feathers. I sat on the wall last night with the flask and watched it turn its head all the way round, the way you used to do to frighten Mum.
Biscuit has been out every dawn since the frost went. I follow her along the edge of Haldane Wood, where the path gives out into bracken, and her prints go ahead of me in the mud, four pads small and neat, then the bigger dent where she stops to sniff. Yesterday they stopped dead at the base of the oak. Nothing there but a pellet of fur and bone, and a single blue-grey feather that could have come from a jay, if jays were blue at the edges like that.
I know you think I'm making a fuss. You always thought the wood was just trees. But the village only exists because the wood kept its side of the bargain, and nobody has written the bargain down since Gran.
Come home at Easter. Bring the good tea, the kind with the bergamot. I'll show you the feather and the prints, and we can sit on the wall and wait for the owl to turn its head round at us.
Love, Nell
