Paw prints with pet names and red hearts
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
Five outlined paw prints sit in a loose cluster, each holding a name in handwritten script, with the largest print carrying the line The road to my heart is paved with paw prints. Three small red hearts sit beside the toe pads, and the rest of the linework is thin black outline. The ink is mostly black with a few touches of red, and the design is shown straight on against plain skin.

Mrs Abernethy kept a lamp burning in the attic window on Tallow Lane, and the dogs of the district said a lit window was the only road home a creature could be sure of once the last streetlight had gone. Kato asked her why that was. She told him that every animal who ever loved a house leaves its marks on the way back to it, and that the marks don't wash away. They only sink into the stone, where a little light can find them.

The night the rain came sideways over the canal, Sammy went out after a tram ticket that blew from the wall and never came back. The others waited on the step with their noses to the gutter. Max said the rain would have swept the scent clean. Lucy said nothing. She walked down to the wet cobbles by the chandler's and found a line of small prints pressed into the grey mud, one after another, heading the wrong way toward the docks and then turning sharply under the railway arch.
They followed. At the arch the small prints stopped beside a larger one, deeper than any of theirs, a print that belonged to no dog Mrs Abernethy had ever kept. Sammy sat beside it, shivering, as though someone had told him to stay put until the others came.
They carried him home between them, and the lamp in the attic window burned until the sky went pale over the gasworks. In the morning the old woman went down with a bucket and scrubbed the stones clean, but when she came back up she said the prints would stay where they were. Some roads, she said, are only ever made by the ones who walk them back.
