The snow has shut the Crowfoot Inn in since Tuesday, and the road to the village is a white ribbon nobody will drive. I am writing this at the kitchen table with the stove ticking, because there is nothing else to do with the evening but count the logs. Mrs Abney says the drifts will hold until Thursday at the earliest.

Our old collie, Biscuit, has taken to walking the same track each morning. She goes out through the yard gate, round the back of the barn, down past the frozen trough, up the lane to the stile, and then back again. Every time, she turns at the same fencepost and comes home. I followed her on Monday to see where she was going, and her prints ran in a long loop, out and round and back, so that the snow looked like a figure stitched into a sheet. Where the loop crossed itself, her pads had pressed down deep, two pairs set one above the other, as if she had stopped there a while.

Father used to say that dogs keep a map in their feet that we are too heavy to read. I took it for one of his sayings, the sort he tossed out with the ash. Now I am not so sure. Yesterday I found her curled on the step by the stile, nose to tail, waiting for nothing I could see.

I have left the back door unbolted and a lamp in the window. If the wind drops tomorrow I will walk the loop with her and bring a flask. Come when the road opens, and bring the good tea.
