Paw prints and heart infinity on a wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a wrist bearing a small black tattoo. Two paw prints sit side by side on the upper left, joined by a thin infinity line that loops into an outlined heart on the right. The linework is solid and consistent, with no shading, and the ink is black against the pale skin, with a blue textured fabric behind the arm.

The tide had already taken the slipway by the time I came down with the bucket, so the prints were going soft at their edges. Two of them, side by side, pressed into the grey silt where the lifeboat cradle meets the concrete. Ada's collie had walked that exact line every morning for eleven years, and nobody in Porthmorrow had ever thought to tell him to stop.

Harbourmaster Pell kept a coil of old mooring line in the shed. He showed me how to make a loop that ran true and never jammed: over, under, round, then back through itself so it lay flat like a figure of eight on its side. "Never ends," he said. "That's why the men liked it. You can run your thumb round it all night and not find the join." At one end he tied a small eye and bent it into a heart, so you always knew which way was home.
On the Thursday Ada came down with her hands in her coat pockets and asked whether the line could go on the slipway. I laid it out along the prints, two dark paws and the long run of rope curving into its loop, and we stood there while the water came up the stone. It reached the first print, then the second, and the silt closed over them like a page turning.
The rope lifted when the sea reached it. It did not sink. It drifted out across the flat water in its endless figure, the heart end turning slowly toward the harbour mouth, and Ada said nothing at all. I have kept the length of it since, coiled in the shed beside the tide book, where the entry for that morning is still written in Pell's careful hand.
