Infinity symbol with heart and paw prints on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a thin black infinity symbol whose left loop holds a small outlined heart, with two filled black paw prints sitting above the right loop. The linework is clean and even, and the paw prints are solid black with no shading. The ink is shown against pale skin on a blue textured towel, with the wrist filling the centre of the frame.

Mags Donnelly knew the last crossing from Oban by its sounds: the clank of the car ramp, the gulls going quiet over the Sound of Kerrera, and the tick of claws on wet steel as Bramble came along the deck to find her. He was a grizzled collie with one ear that stood and one that didn't, and for eleven winters he had ridden the Lismore run without a ticket, sitting on the bench by the bosun's locker as if he had paid for it.

Then the company moved the old boat to the Clyde and gave Mags a newer one with a painted floor and a sign that said no dogs past the wheelhouse door. On her last night she tied a length of red wool to his collar and walked him down to the slipway, where the tide was turning under the pier lamps. She crouched and drew the route on the stone with a stub of chalk: out from the pier, round the buoy, back again, a figure of eight with the ferry's name at one end.
Bramble sniffed the loops, then stepped along them one paw at a time, leaving a trail of damp prints that the tide had not yet reached. He went round twice, the way he always took the bend at Kerrera, and sat in the middle where the lines crossed. The water rose and softened the chalk, but the prints stayed a while longer than the lines did.
The new ferry cleared the harbour at six the next morning. Mags stood at the stern rail with a flask of tea going cold in her hands and watched the wake fan out behind them and curl back on itself, a long loop that never quite closed. At the bench by the locker, she set down a second cup out of habit, and then picked it up again.
