Black fine line tattoo of two paw prints, an infinity symbol and a small heart on a wrist.

Paw prints and infinity heart on a wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of two filled paw prints sits above an infinity symbol that loops into an outlined heart on the wrist. The paw prints are solid black, while the infinity symbol and heart use thin, even linework of similar weight. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a blue textured towel, with the design centred on the wrist and the skin evenly lit.

Dear Tom, the snow came over the Bwlch on Tuesday faster than the wireless said it would, and Moss went up after the two ewes that had strayed past the cairn. I stood at the gate with the lamp and counted to four hundred before I let myself think anything.

When the light went I followed her tracks up the old drovers' road. They were easy to read in the new snow, each pad pressed deep and neat as a stamp. Halfway to the cairn her trail stopped heading for the ewes and began to loop instead, out to the wall, back round the boulder, out again, the same long curve laid over itself until my boots had made a mess of it and hers had not. Dad would have called it a dog being a fool. I thought it looked like someone working a sum they could not finish.

I found her at the top, sitting by the cairn with both ewes pressed against her flanks, as if she had been asked to keep them warm all night and meant to. Her coat was iced at the ends. She did not get up straight away. She looked at me, then down the slope at her own prints, and I swear she waited for me to see the shape of them before she moved.

We came down in the dark with the lamp swinging and the sheep ahead. This morning I went back up with the light and traced the loop with a stick. It closed where it began and then carried on through the other side, the way a figure eight does when you never lift the pencil. I have drawn it on the back of this page so you will know what I mean when you come up at Easter. Bring the good tea. Moss sends her love, and so do I.
