Peach with PEACHY banner on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A bold orange peach with a brown branch and green leaves sits at the centre of the design, with a pale banner across its middle reading PEACHY in dark capitals. Two red flowers with green leaves sit at the lower edges of the peach. Thick black outlines and solid fills of orange, red, green and brown give the piece a classic flash look, shown in close crop on a muscular upper arm.

Ada had kept the stall at Carrow Market since her uncle's knees gave out, and in nineteen years she had never once shut it for weather. On the Thursday the rain came sideways off the river and the cobbles ran like gutters. By noon she had sold everything except one peach, a fat orange thing on a crooked twig, which had ridden in from the orchard wrapped in newspaper.

Nobody wanted fruit in that weather. Uncle Tobias had painted the board above the stall years ago, PEACHY in black letters on a pale ribbon, because he said a peach made a grey day less grey. Ada had never believed him. A woman in a green coat stopped under the awning, shaking water from her hair, and asked the price of the last peach. Ada told her a penny. The woman laughed and said she had only enough for the bus home.
Ada turned the peach over in her palm. Its skin was still warm from the crate by the stove. She said the bus could wait, and put the fruit in the woman's hand. The woman bit into it right there beneath the awning, juice running down her wrist, and for a moment the rain seemed to lift off the roofs of the market.
When the woman had gone, Ada found a penny in the tin anyway, with a small brown leaf pressed flat against it. She never learned who had left it. She propped the board straighter, and the red flowers painted at the corners of the sign kept their colour in the wet.
