Peach with Just Peachy banner on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A peach with two green leaves, one curling behind the fruit and one hanging from a stem, sits above a curved black banner that reads JUST PEACHY. The peach uses bold black outlines with soft orange, yellow and red shading, and a thin red line runs through the banner lettering. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of the upper arm against a dark blue sleeve and a red door in the background.

The peaches came up from Kent in crates packed by a man who never tasted them, and by the third week of August they were all ripening at once, going soft before Ada could get them onto the barrow on Hallam Street. She sold what she could with a cheerful face and a rag over her shoulder. When customers asked how the fruit was, or how she was, she gave the same answer. Just peachy.

Mr Pryce from the building society came by on the Thursday, wanting something for his wife's birthday, and Ada wrapped him the best of the bruised ones in tissue. "Is it sound?" he asked. "Just peachy," said Ada, and he paid her a penny more for the cheek of it. He came back the following Thursday, not angry, only puzzled, holding the stone. His wife had kept it on the windowsill, it had split open and put out a root, and now there was a green shoot the height of a pencil.
Ada took a plank from the back of the glasshouse and painted the words on it in her best hand, the way her father had taught her to letter shop fronts. She had written NOT first, out of habit, and when she saw it she laughed so hard the bin man came round to see what was wrong. She drew a red line through the word and stood the board against the barrow, where the low sun caught the gold of the fruit.
Customers still ask how things are. Some days she tells them the truth, which is that the shoot on Mrs Pryce's sill is up to her knee now, and the peaches are still going soft, and it is, mostly, just peachy.
