The mule has stopped again at the second switchback, and it is you who has to talk it on. The fruit rides in two wicker panniers under sacking, six pineapples packed in straw, each the colour of a late barley field. The wholesaler in the valley paid in advance, which is the only reason you are still up here with the wind pulling at your collar and the last grey snow piled along the ditches.

Your daughter Ines insisted on the crowns. She says the leaves stand up like little green sentries and the skin looks like the scales of a sleeping dragon, or like the lattice on the church door at home. You told her a fruit cares nothing for lattices. Still, at the top of the pass you cut the first one open with your clasp knife, and the smell rose sharp and sweet into the cold, and the mule forgot its sulk entirely.

At the inn on the far side, the landlady has never seen one whole. She turns it over, counts the diamonds with a fingertip, and asks what you want for it. You say nothing. You hand her the knife and let her take the first slice, and she cries a little, or pretends the wind has got into her eye.

On the road back you pass the same stone shelter, and the mule walks lighter, the panniers empty except for one crown you kept back. Its leaves have browned at the edges. You tuck it under your coat, carefully, the way you would carry a letter, and the path goes down towards the lights of home.
