Peacock tattoo across the chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large peacock is tattooed centrally on the chest, with its head and neck facing forward and its tail feathers fanned out to both sides. The feather eyes are outlined in red, yellow and green, and the body is shaded in blue and gold with smooth gradients. The dark ruffled top frames the design against the skin, and the crop shows only the neck and chest.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, pull your chairs in, because the lift in Carrow House has been broken since the spring of ninety-one and the story won't tell itself. Up on the fourteenth floor lived a widow called Mrs Ada Penhale, who kept a peacock in a cage on her balcony, a bird so vain it would not come in out of the rain. Every evening at six she fanned its tail against the grey flats opposite, and the children on the walkway would stop their football to watch those great eyes open, green and gold and ringed in red, as if the whole estate had been given a window.

Then one February the bird went quiet. Ada took to her bed with a bad chest and sent her nephew Kieran down to the corner shop for ginger biscuits and news. He came back with neither. He came back saying the peacock had got out, flown the balcony rail in a gust, and was sitting on the roof of the bus shelter opposite, shouting at the traffic like a landlord.

So the whole block went out to look. Mr Osei from the ground floor brought a ladder he should not have owned, the Donnelly twins brought a bag of mixed seed, and Kieran climbed up with his heart in his mouth. The bird let him get close, then turned its head, slow and proud, and every feather on its back rose up like a crowd that had decided something. Kieran did not catch it. He simply stood under its open tail and waited, and the eyes looked down at him, and he understood that a thing that beautiful was not his to keep.

That night Ada heard the scratch of claws on her balcony rail and found the bird waiting there, tail folded neatly, rain running off it. She never told anyone how it got back in. The lift, she always said, has been broken since ninety-one.
