Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
The left panel shows a bold black geometric pencil shape with a small solid dot below it on the middle finger, set against dark nail polish. The right panel shows a small wolf head on the middle finger, drawn with fine shading in greys and a detailed face. Both tattoos are black and grey, and the photos are taken against plain backgrounds.

She did not move. Her hand, though, moved on its own, sketching the long skull and the set of the ears onto the flap of the survey book while her heart knocked against her ribs. Lines came quick and sure, the way they did when she drew the becks and field walls for Mr Harrold, who paid her a shilling a sheet and never looked at her work.
When the wolf turned and loped back into the trees, she pressed the point down beside the drawing and made a single firm dot, the place where it had stood. Harrold would want that marked as dead ground, a nothing, a spot to be ignored on the printed map. She wrote the date beneath it instead, and the hour, and the words she would later be scolded for: Wolf, living, alone.
Mr Harrold tore the page out that evening and burned it in the grate. Ada kept the stub of the pencil. Forty years later, when the county surveys were finally redrawn, the dot was still there in the margin of her copy, and so was the wolf.
