Small dots and fan marks on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on a patterned fabric, showing small black tattoos on three fingers. There are single dots on the side of the index finger and on the middle and ring fingers, plus a small fan of radiating lines with a dot beside it on the middle finger. The linework is fine and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the dark nail polish and floral fabric sit around the hand.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada Pell called the reels at Wenlow hall for thirty-one winters, and the room never started without her nod. She kept her count where nobody could see it. A dot on the side of the index finger for every reel the hall had danced, a dot on the middle finger for every partner who had asked and been turned down, and on the ring finger a dot for each time the fiddler had mistaken her for the girl who went to Bristol. She had run out of skin by the second decade, so she made the marks small.

The fan lived in her coat. It had sixteen sticks painted with barley, and when the floor grew too hot she opened it with a snap that meant change partners, and the whole room turned like a clock. She closed it again at midnight, which was the end of the night by the old rule. Nobody at Wenlow had ever seen the fan opened twice in one evening, so nobody asked why she kept a dot beside its ribs on her own hand.
The miller's boy came in February, cold to the bone, and asked for the last reel before she could close the fan. She let him take her hand. He danced badly and laughed at himself, and she made no mark for him that night. At midnight she shut the fan and realised she had not counted a single reel.
Walking home she stopped under the lamp at the lych gate and made one more dot, small as a seed, beside the fan. It was the only mark she ever made for a night she had enjoyed.
