Three dots tattoo on a finger

Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with mint green nail polish and two thin gold rings. A small cluster of three solid black dots sits on the side of the middle finger, between the knuckles. The ink is flat black with no visible shading, and the soft, pale background keeps attention on the tattoo.

Sit down, and mind the kettle, it's been on since the watch changed. You want the proper version, not the one they tell in Hull pubs. Right then. The galley of the Marguerite Ash was no bigger than a wardrobe, and the cook, a long Welshman called Idris Pugh, ran it with one ladle and a grudge against potatoes.

Idris had learned his letters from a wireless manual before he ever learned to peel. Three short taps meant S, and S was the first thing he taught the lad who swept the plates, because a sweep who could tap S could always say he was alive. So every morning at six, with the radio shack empty and the bulkheads sweating, Idris struck the stockpot with his spoon, three quick knocks, and waited. Up the companionway, through two decks of steel, the operator Tobias Lune knocked back. Thirty years and never once a miss.

Then came the February gale off the Faroes, when the forward hold went under and the aerial came down with it. For nineteen hours the galley stood silent. Idris kept the stove lit regardless and tapped at six, at noon, at six again, into a dark that tapped nothing back. On the third morning the pot rang out, three short, from somewhere above. Idris answered, and the lad's name went through his head, and he kept tapping until the reply came through the floor, weaker each time, but steady.

They brought the ship in on the Tuesday. I still tap that pot every morning, if you'd believe it, and the lads think I'm mad. Hear that? Three. Now pass me the bloody potatoes.
