Pencil sketch of a heart within a circle

Black and grey · Flash

A pencil sketch on lined notebook paper shows a heart with a small dot and curve for a face, set inside a large loose circle. Radiating lines, arcs and small circles surround the heart, and a looping stroke curls off the lower left of the circle. The handwritten quote "Love comes to me" sits beneath the drawing in the same pencil.

The lift at Calder House stopped between the ninth and tenth floors on a Tuesday, the way it always did, and Nell Varga sat down on the cold steel with a bag of onions in her lap and waited for the hum to come back. Above her, through the hatch, the cable creaked like a rope under a boat. Danny Okafor, who was eleven and had been kept off school with a cough, knelt by the panel and held up his jotter so she could see.

His grandmother had told him the old story, he said, the one about the building's wires. Long before the flats went up, the ground under Calder was a field where a sun hung low over the reeds, and when the first tenants came they asked the sun for a neighbour. The sun sent a heart with a face to ride the lift, and nobody had to wait alone in it again. Nell said that was nonsense, but she let him talk, because the lift was not moving and the onions were heavy.

He had drawn it in pencil: a round sun with its rays cut short, two small circles for lamps, and a curl of rope trailing off the bottom like the tail of a fish. Under it he had written the words, pressing hard. Love comes to me. He taped the page to the panel with a strip from his inhaler box.

The hum came back. The doors opened on ten and Nell stepped out, then turned and saw the drawing still stuck there. When she came down the next morning it was gone, and in its place someone had pencilled a second heart beside the first, smaller, with a tiny mouth open as if it were about to speak.
