Pencil sketch of a key with the word Honesty
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of an ornate key with a rectangular bit on the left and a scrolled, filigree bow on the right. The word Honesty is written in flowing cursive script across the middle of the shaft, with a faint horizontal guideline running behind it. The linework is grey and unshaded apart from light tonal touches, and the composition is centred and horizontal on a warm, muted paper surface.

Your aunt's shed key has been missing since March, so you spend a wet Saturday on your knees under the potting bench, sifting compost through your fingers and swearing at the slugs. Nothing. By the time you give up, the light has gone the colour of weak tea and the honesty at the bottom of the garden is catching what's left of it. Its seed heads have dried to thin silver discs, like coins somebody has rubbed clean, and when you peel back the outer skin the moon underneath is pale and veined like a leaf.

Aunt Maud grew it along the fence for fifty years and never once let you call it anything but honesty. "It flowers early and shows its papers," she'd say, as if that explained it. You crouch by the fence and notice a dark edge tucked under the bottom rail where the mulch has been disturbed, and you work out a brass key with a kitchen knife. It is tarnished, with a flat rectangular bit and a bow curled like an old iron gate, and it is warm from the sun, as if it has been lying there all summer waiting for you to stop looking in the wrong places.
The shed smells of linseed and mice. On the shelf sits her seed ledger, every packet she ever bought with what it promised on the front and what actually came up beside it in her cramped pencil. Beans that went to leaf and nothing else. A sweet pea she called a liar for three seasons running. You turn the pages until you reach the last entry, dated the week before she went into hospital, which says only: Honesty, planted by the fence. Came up true. Tell him.
You take a dry pod from the bench and hold it up to the window, and the light comes straight through it. Then you lock the shed, drop the key into your coat pocket, and walk back up the path to ring your brother, who has been waiting all year for someone to tell him the truth about the garden.
