Small cross tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black cross sits on the inner wrist of a hand held palm up. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the cross is set against pale skin. The background is a wooden floor and a zebra-patterned top, and the blue nail polish is the only other strong colour in the frame.

The lock at Hollin Bridge had been empty for three days when Dad sent me down to bale the chamber, and I found the cross on the top gate beam before I found anything else. It was no bigger than a fly's leg, cut with the point of a nail into the wet oak, the strokes so fine I had to tilt my head to see them against the grain.

Nobody on the cut would tell me who made it. Mrs Pargeter at the lock cottage said it was there when her husband took the tenancy, and Dad only shrugged and said some lock-keepers had a habit of marking the gates they trusted. I asked which gates they trusted. He said the ones that didn't leak.
I worked the windlass with that cross at my shoulder all afternoon, and the water came down the flight slow and brown until the Amity sat level in the stone. Going out of the chamber, the steel hull grazed the beam and rang against the old mark, a small clean sound like a spoon touching a cup.
That evening I took the nail from the toolbox and scored a second cross beside the first, a little lower, where the wood was still sound. Mrs Pargeter saw it at first light and said nothing. She only set a second cup on her table and poured the tea, as if she had been expecting company.
