Fleur-de-lis on a finger

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small fleur-de-lis sits on the side of a finger, drawn in black ink with a mix of solid fills and lighter shading. The design is centred and clearly outlined against pale skin. The nails have black-tipped French manicures, and the plain dark background keeps the focus on the hand.

The mould had cracked twice already, and Madame Vasseur wanted the lily cut fresh before the metal went in. "Three petals," she said, pressing the wax stamp into your palm as if it were a coin. "The middle one stands tallest. Never let anyone tell you it bends."

You had been apprenticed to the foundry on the Rue des Cloches for four winters, long enough to know that the bells of Rouen were sold by weight and remembered by shape. The lily was an old mark. Her grandfather had cut it into every bell that left the yard, a promise to the cathedral that the metal was honest.

The last bell was for the chapel at Honfleur, and it came out of the pit grey and wrong, its voice a flat knock like a shutter in the wind. Madame Vasseur sat on an upturned crate and laughed until she coughed. You took the file to the rim anyway, and under the soot you found the lily had been cut backwards, its tall petal pointing down into the earth. You filed it again, slowly, until the petals faced the sky. Then you hung the bell from the beam and struck it with a hammer wrapped in wool. It rang low and clean, and the sound carried over the wet roofs toward the river, where the barges were already lit for the night.

Madame Vasseur said nothing. She tucked the wax stamp into your apron pocket, where it still sits, warm from your hip, and the next morning the mould was poured again with your hand on the ladle.
