The first thing I learned on the ice was that nobody waits for you. My father had gone out to the edge of the shelf with the others, and the wind came round the headland like a thrown door, and I stood on my own two feet for the first time in a place that was mostly grey. I wobbled. I flapped at nothing. A gull on the rocks above laughed at me in a voice like a rusty hinge.

Then I shuffled towards it, feet slapping the snow, wings out like a man carrying two buckets he does not want to spill.

I found a hollow between two drifts that smelled of nothing at all, and I sat down in it, and I decided that waiting was also a way of getting somewhere. The cold came up through my feet and I let it. When the wind dropped I heard her, close and sure, and I stood up and walked straight into the middle of the noise, and she had her beak open, and it was fish all the way down.
