Black cat held against chest and forearm tattoos
Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A person's upper body is cropped below the chin, holding a black cat with gold chains and a cross pendant hanging across the frame. Black lettering, partly visible on the chest, and a forearm covered in wings and floral or dotwork shapes are the visible tattoos. The image is shot in soft natural light against a pale background, and the tattoos appear to be in black ink and grey tones.

Brother Anselm had the cat before the abbot could forbid it, and by the Feast of the Assumption she had her own stool beside the lectern in the scriptorium. Black as the ink we ground from oak galls, she sat with her tail curled round her feet and watched us pen the psalter's capitals with the look of a canon auditing the accounts.

The trouble began in Lent, when the gilded chain from the reliquary went missing. We searched the sacristy twice. Then Sister Winifred, who kept the bees and trusted nothing with a tail, saw the cat pacing the cloister with a loop of gold links dangling from her jaw like a fisherman's catch. She laid it at the foot of the stone cross in the garth, and the cat sat beside it, washing one paw, as if she had made the offering herself.
I drew her that week in the margin of the Book of Job, a cat with wings folded tight against her shoulders, because Anselm said a creature so proud must have been an angel once and sulked at being sent down. He laughed, then crossed himself, then laughed again. The abbot found the sketch and said nothing, which in our house is a blessing.
Anselm died in the winter, quietly, with the cat asleep on his chest. When we carried him to the churchyard she walked the length of the procession, slow and dignified, and stopped at the edge of the grave. I have never seen an animal look so much like it was keeping watch.
