Peter Pan silhouette tattoos in three placements
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The collage shows three close-up photographs of Peter Pan silhouette tattoos. A solid black silhouette sits on the heel of a foot, a green silhouette with the words Never grow up in script sits on the inner forearm, and a black silhouette appears on the neck beside dark hair. The figures are simple filled shapes with no interior shading, set against bare skin in each frame.

Sit closer, the fire wants feeding and I want you where the light can find your face. You have heard the sea-folk tell it wrong, so listen to how it was. Past the last sandbar, where the charts stop and the gulls give up, there was an island the maps had never been asked to hold. The children there kept their shadows the way other children kept pet birds, and the shadows were always a little too fond of wandering.

Old Mags Tolliver kept a stall at the harbour steps where she sold thread, lamp oil and mended shadows. A boy came up the steps one wet morning with his own shadow folded over his arm like a soaked cloak, and he asked her to sew it back on, grinning as though it were a joke he had played on the tide. She took her needle and a length of black silk and worked it at his heel, stitch by careful stitch, so it would hold as lightly as a shape cut from paper.
Then she gave him the rule every mender knows. A shadow sewn on too tight will drag you down when you run, and one sewn loose will leave the moment the sun slips behind the hill. He laughed and said he had never once walked where he was supposed to. She let him go, and the shadow went with him, lifting over the rooftops, dark against the grey.
They say you can still find her stall if you row out at dusk. Look at the heels of the people walking home and you will see the stitches, neat as a promise, and a small black figure always trying to get a little further ahead.
