Pie slice with Stay Golden banner
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A slice of pie topped with whipped cream and a cherry sits above a ribbon banner that reads STAY GOLDEN. The tattoo uses bold black outlines with flat orange, red and pink fills, and the banner is shaded in dark tones. It is centred on the skin, with a second tattoo partly visible at the bottom edge of the frame against a blue background.

Mae had the last slice of cherry pie on the glass stand when the bus pulled up outside the Sunrise Lunch, and she pressed her thumb into the tin of whipped cream to keep her hands from shaking. Nobody in Calvary Springs ordered cherry in October. Eli Harrow ordered it every Thursday, though, and he was a man who did not like to be disappointed by something he had waited on.

He came in with the dust of the county road on his boots and took the stool nearest the pie case, the way he had since the summer they were sixteen and seventeen and sold lemonade side by side at the fairground. He did not say much. He never had. He watched her cut the wedge, the knife dragging through the crust, and when she set the plate down he had already torn a corner off a paper napkin and was writing on it with a carpenter's pencil.
"Stay golden," he said, and slid it across the counter. Those were the words her father used to say on the porch before she walked to school, and the words painted in gold on the banner above the door of the shop that had closed in March. Eli had never once said them out loud.
She unfolded the napkin. There was only the phrase, and underneath it a small drawing of the slice with a cherry on top and the cream done in three quick pencil strokes. Mae looked at the clock, then at the bus shrinking down the highway, then at the man who had been waiting with his hat in his lap for the better part of a decade. She picked up the knife again and cut a second slice for herself.
