A cartoon Kewpie-style doll wears a hibiscus flower in her hair, a shell-style top and a green grass hula skirt, and holds a pineapple with a cocktail umbrella. Bold black outlines define the figure, with flat, saturated fills in peach, red, yellow, orange and green. The design sits upright and centred on a lower leg.

Brother Anselm had been told the crate held tinned peaches. He knew otherwise the moment the lid came off with a shriek of nails, because nothing at the Abbey of St Ebba's had ever been packed in straw that smelled of sunshine. Nested among six tins of pineapple rings sat a small china doll with a round peach-coloured body, a red hibiscus pinned above one ear, and a grass skirt the green of new bracken.

"Send it back," said Prior Gerald, who did not believe in anything he could not sign for.

"There's no return address. Only a label reading For the Garden of Repose." Anselm turned the card over. The handwriting was looping and cheerful, clearly the work of someone who had never met a monk.

The doll was carried to the refectory anyway, and by Vespers the community had voted, two to one with Gerald abstaining in a sulky way, that she could stay on the windowsill above the bread oven. She held a tin of pineapple in one arm, a paper parasol pricked into its side, and she seemed to be waiting for someone to start the music.

Nobody ever learned who had sent her. But every Sunday after that, Anselm set one small tin on the sill beside her, and every Sunday the parasol had been turned a little further towards the sun.
