Pine tree and crescent moon on upper back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a pine tree sits centrally on the upper back, with its tapering silhouette overlapping a crescent moon outline. The tree is filled with solid black ink with ragged, uneven edges, while the moon is drawn as a thin single line that curves around the left side of the tree. The image is in black ink only, with a plain dark background and soft natural light on the skin.

Dear Ruth,

You'll think me soft for writing about a tree, but the Scots pine above the hut has been on my mind since the night Mr Galbraith shook me awake to see the moon. It hung low and thin over the ridge, a paring of light, and the old pine nearest us had caught it so the crescent seemed to curl round the trunk like a hand. He said a tree is only honest when it stands clear of its own shadow. I laughed at him then.
The factor had marked that pine for felling, along with forty others, and the axes have been ringing down the glen all week. Galbraith would not let his crew near it. He sat at its foot with his flask and his father's notebook, drawing the moon in pencil on the back of a tally sheet, a single line that never quite closed. When the factor came up the track on Thursday, Galbraith only tapped the page and said, "Look at the shape of it first."
I did look. The branches were ragged where the wind had worried them, black against the sky, and the moon ran round the left of them like someone keeping a secret. The factor went back down the hill without his saw. Galbraith folded the sheet into his pocket and said the pine could keep its moon a while longer.
Yours, Tom
