Pine tree and script quote on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black pine tree with layered, feathered branches sits above a small line of cursive script on the arm. The tree is filled with dense black ink and sharp edges, while the lettering is thin and even. The photograph is taken against a plain white wall, with the subject's face out of frame and the arm in the lower right.

Dear Tom, the wind has gone round to the north-east again, so the boats are tied up at the quay and I have nothing to do but count the pines on the headland. There are fourteen now. Your father planted the first one the year we married, a sapling he carried up from the nursery at Penhale in a wet sack, swearing it would outlive every one of us. It has grown crooked, leaning east like a man squinting into weather.

Mrs Venn from the chandlery came up with the post this morning and asked after you, and I told her the Marigold would be back by Thursday if the glass held. She looked at me the way people look at a woman whose husband is always at sea, kindly and with a little pity. I didn't tell her I'd been singing under my breath at the sink. The vicar gave us that hymn on Sunday, the one with the line about binding a wandering heart, and I sat there with the hymn book open on my knee thinking of you out past the bar, your heart going wherever the nets take it.

I've pressed a sprig from the old tree into the envelope with this, so you'll find a few needles scattered on the page. Keep them in your oilskin pocket and it will smell of home when the spray gets up. If the tide brings you in on Thursday, walk up the path before you go to the cottage. I've been measuring that pine with a knotted string since March, and it has grown a hand's width. Come and see it, and bring the rest of yourself back on the same tide.

Your loving wife, Nell
