Pine tree in a diamond on a calf

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A tall pine tree rises from a shaded geometric ornament at the base and sits inside a large diamond outlined in fine dots. The tree has dense, textured needles and a straight trunk, while the lower ornament uses stippled and solid shading in layered diamond shapes. The photograph is taken straight on in black and white, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the pit-prop cart waiting at the top of the lane before the whistle goes, and Dad's old saw wrapped in sacking under your arm. The pines came up the Tyne on the barges that spring, Norway timber stacked so high the bargemen swore at the bridge arches, and the colliery wanted every length squared and stood up in the dark where the roof had to be held. Nobody in Hetton Dene asked where a pine came from. They asked how straight it was.

Uncle Walter had a rule about the grain. Read the wood before you read the seam, he said, because the seam will lie to you and the wood will not. You marked each prop with a chalk diamond at the butt, the same shape your mother pressed into the Sunday loaf, and the overman checked the diamonds before he signed the tallies. Three hundred props a shift. Your hands learned the weight of them before your shoulders did.

The fall came on a Thursday, low and sudden, and the men under it were not the men you had been joking with that morning. Afterwards the dust lay on everything, the cart, the tallies, the chalk. You went back down the lane with the saw and a lamp and found one prop still standing at the end of the row, its diamond clean and its grain running true.

You did not cut that one. You laid your palm flat on the bark the way Walter used to test a roof, and felt nothing shift. Then you chalked a second diamond beneath the first and walked up the lane to tell the women the row was still standing.
