Three pine trees on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Three pine trees of differing heights sit in a row on the side of an ankle, drawn in black ink. The trees have sketchy, feathered outlines and shaded branches, with the tallest in the centre. The skin is pale and the background is a wooden table and a warm indoor room, with no colour ink present.

'Wait, Ruth, the tide's not turned,' my father called from the wheelhouse, but I was already over the gunwale of the Ellen with the spare net bundled under my arm. The gulls had gone quiet over Kelda Bay, and in that harbour quiet meant the weather was coming round early.

Grandad Walter planted three Scots pines on the headland the year the fleet numbered three boats. He said a fleet should be counted from the shore, not from the sea, so that whoever was out there could look up and find itself. The tallest he set for the Morag, the skipper's boat, the middle one for the Ellen, and the smallest for the little coble nobody expected to last. She outlasted all of them.

That morning the wind swung north-west and we ran for the mouth with the Morag already gone to the inshore grounds. I hauled while Dad watched the swell, and somewhere in the hauling I stopped thinking about the weather and started counting the trees from the water, the way Grandad taught me, three dark shapes above the black rocks.

We came in with a full hold and a torn net, the Morag already tied up at the quay, her skipper shouting about the cold. That evening I climbed the headland with a flask of tea and stood under the pines while the harbour lamps came on below. I counted them from the shore, as he'd shown me, and found myself standing in the middle of the row, where I had always been.
