Pine tree silhouette on the ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small solid black pine tree with layered, branching foliage and a straight trunk is tattooed on the ankle. The design is a filled silhouette with no shading, and the ink is crisp against the skin. The shot is taken from a low side angle, with a shoe strap across the heel and a grey carpet and upholstered chair in the background.

Dear Ruth,

The man from the coastguard came out on Tuesday with his clipboard and told me the gale would take the pine by the cottage if the wind kept on from the west. I said I had heard that before. I planted it the spring you were born, from a cone I carried home in my coat pocket from the Tummel road, and it has outlasted two roofs and your mother's patience. It stands crooked now, leaning towards the sea as though it is listening for a boat.
I climbed the tower again last night to check the wick. The lamp turns on its clockwork and throws its white arm over the water every ten seconds, and each time it sweeps across the cottage the tree jumps out black against the sky, its branches laid flat like a hand held up to say stop. I used to think the light was the thing that mattered. Now I think it is the dark shape it reveals that people remember.
I have not decided what to do about the tree. Mr Halloran at the boatyard says he will fetch his saw if I want it down before winter. I told him I would think on it, which he took as a no. You always said I was as stubborn as the roots.
Come up at Easter if the ferry runs. Bring the boy. He can see the lamp from the bottom of the stairs, and I will show him where I carved my initials into the lintel, which the damp has not yet had the sense to finish off.
Your loving dad, Tom
