Three pine trees on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows three conifer trees of differing heights standing side by side, drawn in black ink with sketchy, feathered linework. The trees have no shading beyond the line strokes, and the ink appears solid and crisp against the skin. The foot rests on a reddish-brown wooden surface, and the tattoo sits near the centre of the frame.

The last elephant had gone to a farm near Ludlow, so Mrs Teale pitched the big top in the pine wood anyway. Three trees stood at the edge of the clearing, a tall one, a middle one and a short one, and she said they were the only audience the company had left. Her son Abel had been clowning since he was nine, and every evening he tied the wire between the trees himself, pulling it tight with his teeth and his good arm.

The old hands said a wire strung between three pines would hold anyone who meant to cross it. Nobody had ever tested that, because nobody had ever had the nerve. The horses went first, then the trapeze rigger, then the girl who sold toffee apples. By November there were only four caravans left, and the money had gone to feed and diesel.

On the last night Abel walked the wire without a net, with one lantern set at the foot of the tallest tree. He stopped at the middle pine, where the wire hummed in the cold, and he stood there so long that his mother came out of her caravan to see if he had fallen. He had not. He simply looked down at the dark clearing and said that the trees seemed to be listening.

In spring the canvas went to a rag man in Hereford. The three pines are still standing at the edge of the wood, and someone has nailed a painted board to the smallest one that reads TEALE'S, RING HERE, though there is no ring and no one to hear it.
