Pine tree tattoo on the ankle
Botanical · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The upper photo shows a single tall pine or fir tree in black ink on the side of an ankle, with layered, irregular branches and a slightly soft, shaded outline. The lower half is a flat illustrated graphic of a green pine beneath mountains and a dark treeline, with the word Oregon in blue serif lettering. The tattoo is the only subject of the photo and sits centrally against the skin.

The thaw came late to Harrow Ridge that year, and the Pell brothers were still hauling feed up the frozen lane when the fir at the top of the east field began to lean. Old Mabel Pell said it was only the snow loading its branches, but she put a hand on the trunk anyway and said it was humming, and nobody argued with her, because she had been right about the well and right about the fox.

The tree was the last of a row their grandfather had planted to break the wind. Every other fir on the ridge had been cut for the mill in the wet years, but this one had grown tall and narrow, its layered boughs shaggy as a wet dog. When the first crack came, the brothers ran out with lanterns and found the trunk split at the base, sap frozen in amber beads down the bark like the tears of a sleeping child. Bran wanted the saw. Tom wanted to wait for morning. Mabel went out in her nightdress with a jar of lard and a spoon, and she rubbed the wound slow until the frost gave way.
In the spring they found a tin box wedged in the roots, the kind used for lamp wicks, and inside it a folded map of the valley with a single pine drawn in ink at the centre. Under it, in their grandfather's cramped hand, were the words: keep it standing and it keeps the hill. Bran laughed until he saw the date. Mabel only tucked the map back under the bark where the split had closed, and the fir put out new green at the tips before the first swallows came.
