Pine trees in a diamond on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo shows a row of tall pine trees standing on hatched ground inside a large diamond outline. The trees are drawn in solid black silhouette with thin trunks and sparse branches, while the ground at the bottom is shaded with short horizontal strokes. The photograph is black and white, with the tattoo set against a plain pale background and a leg cropped in the frame.

She did not look up from the ledger. The figures had to agree with the estate's, or the timber merchant in Gothenburg would not pay, and her father would be right about women and sums after all. She drew the boundary with a ruler and a pencil worn to a stub, then, because the ruling felt too plain, she sketched the stand of trees beside it: tall, narrow, branches counted off like rungs on a ladder.

The lake had been there when the company bought the land, a flat grey sheet at the bottom of the hill, and the surveyors had always drawn it as a smudge. Harriet drew it properly, short strokes laid horizontal, the way the ice had scraped the shore into lines. Then she boxed the whole view in a diamond, because the instrument case had a diamond brass plate on its lid, and because the frame made the forest look like something you could carry home.

On Friday the merchant's clerk came up the track, read the ledger and frowned at the drawing in the margin. "Those are not trees for the saw," he said. "No," Harriet said, and closed the book. "Those are the ones we keep."
