Mountain and cable car in a triangle on upper back
Dotwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small triangular tattoo sits on the upper back and frames a mountain landscape with a dotted sun and rays above a cloud line. Two cable car cabins hang from a single cable across the lower part of the design. The tattoo combines stippled dotwork shading on the mountain and sun with fine outlines on the cabins and cable, all in black ink and grey tones.

Dear Marguerite, the cable car on the Col is running again, though only the lower cabin, and Father says the upper bearing will hold until the thaw if nobody leans on it. I went up on Tuesday with the grease tins and the wind was so clean it hurt my teeth. From the top station you can see the whole valley folded like a sheet someone forgot to iron, and the sun comes up over the far ridge in a dotted sort of way, all spokes and no heat, which is why the old men call it the dressmaker's sun.

You asked in your last letter whether I still think about the summer we dropped the spare seat into the gorge. I do, more than I should. Mr Aubert swore at us for an hour and then gave us each a boiled sweet from his waistcoat, which was the most frightening thing he ever did. We never told him that you had been the one holding the rope when it slipped, or that I had been crying so hard I could not see the wheel.
I have hung a small tin charm on the cabin hook, the one shaped like a triangle, so the wind has something to turn. When the cabins pass each other at the midpoint they knock together like two people deciding not to speak. Come in the autumn, when the cloud sits below the top station and we can ride up through it with nothing to look at but each other's coats. I will bring the sweets. Yours in grease and gratitude, Odile.
