Gradient pineapple on an arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A pineapple is drawn in bold black outline with a fruit body shaded from yellow at the top to pink at the base, and spiky green leaves fanning upwards. The linework is even and the colour fills are smooth, with soft blending between the yellow, orange and pink segments. The tattoo sits centrally on the skin, with a grey fabric sleeve and a checkered floor visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mr Pellow had told the village boys twice that the pineapples in pit four were not for touching, so when Dora Keane came round the flue wall and found Tom Vickery kneeling on the hot bricks with a penknife, she did not raise her voice. She only said his name and waited, the way her mother had taught her to wait for a kettle.

He had cut the crown off. It lay on the bricks beside him, a spiky green fan with the stalk still weeping a little milky juice. The fruit itself was a marvel that even the steward from Ashcombe Hall had come twice to admire: green at the top, then a band of butter yellow, orange at the shoulders, and at the base a blush of pink where the stove heat had coaxed it along. 'It's for my mum,' Tom said. 'She's been poorly since Michaelmas and she's never once had one.'

Dora knelt beside him and turned the crown over in her fingers. The base was still firm and cool. 'Then we'll not waste it,' she said. 'Fetch that jam jar.' She filled it from the rainwater butt, set the crown in so only the lowest leaves touched the water, and tucked the jar into the shady corner by the potting bench where nobody but gardeners ever looked.

By Lady Day the roots had come out white as old lace, and a new leaf stood up from the middle, stiff and bright as a freshly painted gate. Tom carried the jar up the lane wrapped in a tea towel, and Dora went back to her pits and said nothing to Mr Pellow about any of it. The fruit was gone, but nobody had counted the crown.
