Small pineapple on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small pineapple outline sits on the forearm, with a crown of pointed leaves at the top and a diamond grid pattern across the body of the fruit. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or fill. The black and white photograph shows the tattoo centred against plain light skin on a dark background.

Mr Okafor had asked for a pineapple every night since Monday, and at twenty past two on Thursday morning I finally came up the back stairs with one tucked under my arm. It was from the staff fridge on Ward 7, left behind by a visitor who never came back for it. Nobody would miss it. I said as much, and he laughed until the drip stand rattled.

We sat in the alcove by the window, where the corridor lights hum a half-tone lower and the car park below looks like a painting someone forgot to finish. He had me score the skin with the plastic knife from his tray table, not cutting deep, just a grid of shallow diamonds across the gold. 'My mother did this in Enugu,' he said, 'with a razor blade and a bowl of salt water, and she would not let anyone help her.' I did not ask what the salt was for. I just kept the lines straight.
Near four, when the porters were on their break and the lift doors had stopped sighing, he asked me to twist off the crown. It came free with a small tuft of leaves spread like a hand, and he turned the base over to look at the pale stubble of fibre. 'Water it,' he said. 'Put it on the sill. Give it a year.' I wrapped the stump in a damp paper towel and wrote his name on a yoghurt pot with a biro, though there was no soil to go in it yet.
He went home on Saturday. The sill in bay three is bare now except for a jam jar, and in the jar six white roots have started to reach down through the water, each as thin as a pencil line. I check it between obs. It is absurd to be pleased about roots, I know. But the crown is still standing, and every morning it looks a little more certain of itself.
