A pineapple with a crown of spiky leaves is tattooed upright on the ankle. The fruit is built from rounded segments with soft grey shading and fine dark outlines, giving it a three-dimensional look. The design sits centrally on plain skin against a dark background.

Sit close to the range where the bread's proving, and I'll tell you how the pineapple came aboard the Mercy in the spring of '51. Captain Ruddock bought it off a Kingston trader for two shillings and a promise, and carried it in the bread locker wrapped in sailcloth like a sick infant. Nobody aboard had seen one. The carpenter swore it was a pinecone grown fat in the tropics, and the boatswain reckoned it a sort of cabbage.

By the Azores it had begun to smell. I was ship's cook then, and the captain handed it to me with a look that said keep it alive or keep your wages. So I kept it out of the damp and turned it a quarter round each night so the sun through the porthole couldn't sour one side. The men grumbled that I was courting a fruit. I told them the crown was the proof of it. A thing that can grow its own head back is not to be eaten in a hurry.

We raised Bristol on a grey morning with the fruit still green at the top. On the quay a girl was selling oysters from a basket, and I saw her eye go to the parcel under my arm. Her name was Hester, and her mother kept a lodging house by the Frome where sailors came off the ships with nowhere to lay their heads. I gave Hester the fruit and told her to cut a slice for every man who knocked that week, and to keep the crown for planting.

Years later I walked past that house. There was a clay pot on the sill with a green crown standing up out of it, stiff as a sentry, and a card pinned to the door in careful letters that read Welcome. That is all a pineapple is, lad. A promise to the stranger that he is expected.
