Pineapple house tattoo on ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline tattoo shows a pineapple-shaped house with a crosshatched diamond pattern on its body, two round windows and an arched door at the base, with leaves on top. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink with no shading. The photo is taken close up on a pale ankle, with a woven multi-coloured bracelet above the tattoo and a patterned sock or fabric at the bottom of the frame.

Mrs Ottoline Pike had been warned that the pineapple house was too silly for a rented flat at the end of Brackwater Pier, but she signed the lease anyway, mostly because the agent said nobody else would take it. Her neighbour, a retired lighthouse keeper called Desmond Auld, came down the steps each morning with a flask and an opinion. "Fruit doesn't keep out damp," he said in the first week. She didn't argue. She was busy scrubbing salt off the glass with vinegar and an old toothbrush, and by the end of the month the portholes were so clear that the bay seemed to sit inside them like a pair of coins.

In October a storm tore the pier railings loose and flattened half the bait shop, but the pineapple stood. Desmond came down in his dressing gown, shouting over the wind that his own cottage had lost its chimney. She made him tea inside the arched door, where the rain could not reach, and they sat knee to knee in the small round room while the windows rattled and the sea threw itself at the stilts.

When the weather cleared, he came back with a tin of paint and a brush the width of a thumb. He painted a tiny crooked sign above the arch that read MIND YOUR HEAD, and underneath, in smaller letters, HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE DAMP. She left it up for years.
