Diamond in ornate scrollwork on a chest

Neo-trad · Chest · Colour · Photo

A red and pink faceted diamond sits at the centre of the composition, set within a gold ornamental frame with scrolls, a fan-shaped crest at the top and small dots along the sides. The linework is bold and dark, with soft shading on the gold and a lighter lavender wash behind the lower scrolls. The tattoo is photographed close up on the chest against a black top with a purple strap.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Hesper, the frame for the Marrowgate stone came up from the goldsmiths this morning, and Master Orrin has been pacing the workshop ever since because the scrolls were cast a hair too heavy. He made me hold the wax while he cut them back, and I pressed the little dots along the sides one by one with a bone pin, so the light would catch them the way it catches rain on a window.

The stone itself is the trouble. It came out of the Veldmoor pits in the spring, red as a fox's tongue, and the cutters in Saltreach swear it is the same red that ran down the old king's steps the night the river froze. Orrin will not say that aloud in front of the court. He only tells me to keep my hands still and my breath off the facets, because a breath can fog a rose-cut stone, and the queen notices fog.

Yesterday I found an offcut in the sawdust, a sliver no bigger than a barleycorn, and I kept it in my cheek like a boy with a sweet. Nobody counts slivers. It is wrapped in linen under the loose board by my cot now, and I mean to send it to you for the spring fair so you can set it in whatever ring you choose from Mistle's stall. It is the only part of this commission that belongs to nobody.

The frame will be finished tomorrow with a blank cartouche at the bottom, where the herald wants the words of the crown carved. Orrin has left it empty. He says a frame should hold one thing for a while before it is asked to hold a name. I have been thinking about that all evening, and about how long I have been waiting to find a frame for myself. Write soon. Your brother, Piers.
