Pink flamingo with clouds on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A pink flamingo stands on one leg in water, with its neck curved and its large cartoon eye looking forwards. Soft blue clouds fill the background, with small green reeds and rippling blue water at the base. Smooth shading gives the feathers and beak volume, and the bright palette is kept within a single rounded, illustrative composition.

Mrs Dorothy Vail had kept the boating lake at Hollins Park for thirty-one years, and in all that time the flamingo had never once stood on two legs. It stood on one, always, in the shallows by the reeds, with its long neck bent round to watch the pedalos go by as if it were the one keeping the accounts.

The ring arrived in August, dropped by a girl on the footbridge who had been trying to win a bet off her brother. It sank, the way rings do, and the flamingo fished it up in its beak in front of half the queue for the ice cream van. Nobody could say how it had got the ring onto its claw. Dorothy suspected the bird had simply decided, and that a creature with that much opinion did not need a reason.
After that it would not give the ring back. Ruth from the café offered a swap for a bag of mixed grain. Two lads offered a tenner. The flamingo turned its wide blue-lidded eye on each of them and clicked its beak, and they walked away feeling oddly reprimanded.
On the last Saturday of the season Dorothy rowed out, slow and deliberate, and held out her own wedding band on the flat of her palm. The bird considered it for a long while. Then, very carefully, it tilted its neck and set its ring down on the water, where it spun in the ripples and settled beside the reflected clouds. Dorothy drew her hand back. The flamingo went back to standing on one leg.
