Pink flamingo on the upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A pink flamingo stands on one leg in a small blue pool of water, with its neck curved into an S shape and a yellow and black beak. The bird has soft shading in pinks and reds on its body and wings, with smooth outlines. The design is centred on a plain skin background, with the black sleeve of a garment visible at the edge of the frame.

The water tank on the chapel roof split in February, and by March a pool the size of a tablecloth had settled in the car park behind Market Street, blue as a gas flame where the sky lay on it. The flamingo arrived in April. Nobody saw her come. One morning she was simply standing in the middle of the pool on one leg, neck curled into an S, as though the council had ordered it for her.

The town argued about it over tea and over the counter at Pell's Hardware. Mr Pell said she would catch her death. The vicar said she was lost and ought to be written to. The lads from the garage said she was a pink lawn ornament someone had dropped off a lorry. She listened to all of it with the look of a woman who has heard worse at bus stops, and she did not move her foot from the water once.
Summer came hard and the tarmac cracked around the edges of the pool, and Ruth Ashdown from the bakery began carrying a watering can down at six each morning, before the ovens were cool enough to leave. Nobody asked her to. By August the children had started bringing bread crusts and leaving them on the kerb, and the flamingo ate them one at a time, slowly, the way the old men ate their Sunday dinners.
She went south in September with the swallows, and the pool went with her, as puddles do. Where it had been, the tarmac stayed darker than anywhere else in the car park, and when Mr Pell came to lay fresh chippings he stopped with his spade in the air and said he would leave that patch alone, thank you, and let it be.
