Pink flowers and vines on a black symbol
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A bold black curved symbol resembling a stylised numeral is entwined with a vine of green leaves and three pink five-petalled flowers with yellow centres. The black linework is solid and smooth, with the flowers and leaves filled in with flat colour and some tonal shading. The tattoo sits centred on the skin against a dark background.

Her gran had told her what it meant when she was small, sitting on the step with a bowl of peas in her lap: three lamps not checked in, three men left at the face when the gas came through the Low Seam in '08. After that the village kept the number the way it kept the chapel bell, rung and remembered. Overman Bell came round at the shift change with his lamp swinging. He stopped at the door and looked at the leaves crawling over the black stroke, and for a moment his face did the thing it did at funerals. 'Leave it,' he said. 'Three's a good number for a lamp hut. Means somebody's counting.'
Nell watched the cage drop into the dark with the day's men, then picked up her tin and went to check the wicks. Behind her the vine kept climbing the wall, and she let it.
